The relationship between personality and mental disorders in adult psychiatric outpatients

Project description:

Many empirical studies give evidence of co-occurrence of mental and personality disorders (PDs). On the other hand psychoanalytic models (egg. Kernberg, 1986) explain the relationship between personality and mental disorders. This research will examine the correlation between PDs and symptomatic mental disorders in adult psychiatric outpatients as they are represented in personality self-report inventories. The Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI; Morey, 2009) and the Questionnaire of Personality Disorders (VMO; Benedik, 2004) will be used. The PAI is complex personality measure that consists of different personality trait dimensions on the one and specific symptom scales on the other hand. The VMO is a self–report instrument that reflects phenomenology of PDs and is focused on the basic experiencing of self and others in specific personality types (Benedik, 2009). We expect that our results will confirm the relationship between phenomenological aspect of personality pathology and mental disorders according to psychoanalytic theories.
